MatterOfStats 2025 : Team Dashboard for Round 9

Below is the latest Ranking on Dashboard Metrics table, which continues to show that the teams currently in the Top 9 deserve to be there based on the metrics shown here (note that I order teams based firstly on the percentage of available competition points they have accrued and then on percentage). The only exception remains Essendon, who rank no better than 5th on any metric, and as low as 17th on Q3 Performances, and who have a percentage of just 90.8. The Win Production Function suggests that their scoring data justifies 13th position on the ladder.

The metrics currently most rank correlated with ladder position are:

• Percent of Quarters Won: +0.89

• Opponent Goals per Game: +0.85

• MoS Win Production Function: +0.84

• Opponent Points per Game: +0.84

• Opponent Scoring Shots per Game: +0.81

• Own Scoring Shots per Game: +0.8

• Own Points per Game: +0.78

• Own Goals per Game: +0.74

Those least rank correlated with ladder position are:

• Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion: +0.33

• Own Scoring Shot Conversion: +0.37

• Q1 Performances: +0.48

Next, here’s the latest Team Dashboard, which shows, among other things, that:

• North Melbourne have yet to win a Q1, Port Adelaide a Q4, and West Coast a Q3.

• Adelaide, Collingwood and Gold Coast are the only teams to have outscored their opponents in all four quarters

• Richmond and West Coast are the only teams to have been outscored by their opponents in all four quarters

• Still very few teams have similar percentages across all four quarters

• Brisbane Lions (Q3), Carlton (Q1), Collingwood (Q3), Geelong (Q4), Gold Coast (Q4), North Melbourne (Q2), Melbourne (Q3), and Port Adelaide (Q1) all have particularly strong records in the quarters noted relative to their performances in the three other quarters.

• Team Conversion rates by quarter are also highly variable for many teams. For example, the Lions have converted at 64% in Q3s but only 38% in Q1s.

• Other teams with a large range of conversion rates are:

  • Gold Coast: 59% Q4 and 42% Q2

  • Hawthorn: 63% Q4 and 41% Q1

  • North Melbourne: 65% Q2 and Q4, and 40% Q1

  • Melbourne: 60% Q3 and 39% Q4

  • St Kilda: 70% Q1 and 42% Q2

• A number of teams also have a large range of opponent conversion rates across quarters:

  • Brisbane Lions: 64% Q1 and 41% Q3

  • Gold Coast: 75% Q3 and 41% Q1

  • North Melbourne: 67% Q1 and 49% Q2

  • Melbourne: 67% Q4 and 43% Q1

  • West Coast: 62% Q2 and 40% Q1
