MatterOfStats 2025 : Team Dashboard for Round 10

Below is the latest Ranking on Dashboard Metrics table, which continues to show that the teams currently in the Top 9 deserve to be there based on the metrics shown here (note that I order teams based firstly on the percentage of available competition points they have accrued and then on percentage). The persistent exception remains Essendon, who now rank no better than 6th on any metric, and 12th or lower on 11 metrics, and who have a percentage of just 81.2. The Win Production Function still suggests that their scoring data justifies 13th position on the ladder.

Having said that Essendon’s metrics don’t appear to justify a spot in the Top 8, none of the teams outside the Top 8 have stand out credentials. Best amogst them, however, is undoubtedly GWS, a shade ahead of Carlton.

The metrics currently most rank correlated with ladder position are:

  • MoS Win Production Function: +0.92

  • Percent of Quarters Won: +0.88

  • Own Scoring Shots per Game: +0.85

  • Opponent Scoring Shots per Game: +0.83

  • Opponent Points per Game: +0.81

  • Opponent Goals per Game: +0.79

  • Own Points per Game: +0.78

  • Own Goals per Game: +0.77

Those least rank correlated with ladder position are:

  • Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion: +0.32

  • Own Scoring Shot Conversion: +0.38

  • Q1 Performances: +0.47

  • Q2 Performances: +0.48

Next, here’s the latest Team Dashboard, which shows, among other things, that:

  • Port Adelaide have yet to win a Q4.

  • Adelaide, Collingwood, Gold Coast and now Western Bulldogs are the only teams to have outscored their opponents in all four quarters

  • Richmond and West Coast are the only teams to have been outscored by their opponents in all four quarters

  • Still very few teams have similar percentages across all four quarters

  • Brisbane Lions (Q3), Carlton (Q1), Collingwood (Q3), Geelong (Q4), Gold Coast (Q4), North Melbourne (Q2), Melbourne (Q3), and Port Adelaide (Q1) all have particularly strong records in the quarters noted relative to their performances in the three other quarters. It’s a little odd that this has persisted as far into the season as it has.

  • Adelaide, Gold Coast, and Western Bulldogs are the only teams to have generated, on average, more scoring shots than their opponents in every quarter.

  • Essendon, North Melbourne, Richmond and West Coast are the only teams to have generated, on average, fewer scoring shots than their opponents in every quarter.

  • Team Conversion rates by quarter remain highly variable for many teams. For example, the Lions have converted at 64% in Q3s but only 38% in Q1s.

  • Other teams with a large range of conversion rates are:

    • Essendon: 64% Q2 and 47% Q1

    • Gold Coast: 61% Q4 and 44% Q2

    • Hawthorn: 62% Q4 and 43% Q1

    • North Melbourne: 65% Q1 and 47% Q1

    • Melbourne: 62% Q3 and 38% Q4

    • Richmond: 63% Q2 and 41% Q4

    • St Kilda: 69% Q1 and 43% Q2

  • A number of teams also have a large range of opponent conversion rates across quarters:

    • Brisbane Lions: 61% Q1 and 44% Q3

    • Fremantle: 65% Q2 and 45% Q3

    • Gold Coast: 76% Q3 and 43% Q1

    • Melbourne: 66% Q4 and 46% Q1

    • West Coast: 61% Q2 and 41% Q1
