MatterOfStats 2025 : Team Dashboard for Round 14
/Below is the latest Ranking on Dashboard Metrics table, which again shows that the teams currently in the Top 8 deserve to be there based on the metrics shown here (note that I order teams based firstly on the percentage of available competition points they have accrued and then on percentage).
Outside the eight, Western Bulldogs continue to have metrics that would also justify a spot for them in the Top 8. The Win Production Function still has them in 4th.
The metrics currently most rank correlated with ladder position are:
Percent of Quarters Won: +0.88
MoS Win Production Function: +0.88
Opponent Goals per Game: +0.88
Opponent Points per Game: +0.88
Own Goals per Game: +0.85
Opponent Scoring Shots per Game: +0.84
Own Points per Game: +0.83
Own Scoring Shots per Game: +0.8
Q1 Performances: +0.74
Those least rank correlated with ladder position are:
Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion: +0.21
Own Scoring Shot Conversion: +0.42
Q2 Performances: +0.49
It’s remarkable that three of the bottom six teams on Opponent Scoring Shot Conversion currently sit in the Top 8 on my competition ladder, and that four of the Top 10 on this metric sit in ladder positions 14th and below.
Next, here’s the latest Team Dashboard, which shows, among other things, that:
Geelong have won 93% of Q4s but only 46% of Q2s.
Adelaide have won 93% of Q2s but only 50% of Q3s.
Adelaide, Collingwood, Gold Coast and Western Bulldogs are the only teams to have outscored their opponents in all four quarters
Richmond and West Coast remain the only teams to have been outscored by their opponents in all four quarters
Still very few teams have similar percentages across all four quarters
Carlton (Q1), Collingwood (Q3), Essendon (Q2), Fremantle (Q3), Geelong (Q4), Gold Coast (Q4), GWS (Q4), North Melbourne (Q2), Melbourne (Q3), and Port Adelaide (Q1) all have particularly strong records in the quarters noted relative to their performances in the three other quarters.
Brisbane Lions, Collingwood, Gold Coast and Western Bulldogs remain the only teams to have generated, on average, more scoring shots than their opponents in every quarter.
Essendon, North Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda, and West Coast remain the only teams to have generated, on average, fewer scoring shots than their opponents in every quarter.
Team Conversion rates by quarter remain highly variable for a number of teams. For example, the Lions have converted at 60% in Q1s but only 45% in Q4s.
Other teams with a large range of conversion rates are:
Essendon: 63% Q2 and 46% Q1
North Melbourne: 62% Q4 and 48% Q1
Melbourne: 57% Q3 and 39% Q4
Richmond: 54% Q3 and 38% Q4
St Kilda: 64% Q1 and 48% Q2
A number of teams also have a large range of opponent conversion rates across quarters:
Brisbane Lions: 61% Q2 and 47% Q3
Essendon: 60% Q3 and 46% Q2
Fremantle: 62% Q1 and 44% Q3
Geelong: 61% Q3 and 42% Q4
Gold Coast: 64% Q3 and 46% Q1
Melbourne: 65% Q4 and 50% Q1
St Kilda: 60% Q2 and 46% Q4
