2026 - Team Ratings After Round 24

MoSHBODS changed the ranking of a startling 13 teams this week, including lifting Sydney into 2nd and Brisbane Lions into 3rd at the expense of Geelong.

The other multi-spot movers were Carlton (up into 7th) and Collingwood (down 2 into 9th).

MARS reranked 12 teams, including elevating Brisbane Lions by 3 places into 1st, dropping Fremantle 3 places into 4th, dropping Melbourne and St Kilda two spots each, and elevating Western Bulldogs by 3 places.

MoSHBODS finished with a Top 3 of Fremantle, Sydney, and Brisbane Lions, while MARS has Brisbane Lions, Sydney, and Geelong.

MoSHBODS RATINGS

Overall, MoSHBODS has only 10 teams rated as above average with the Saints and Suns falling just below the cutoff.

On the Component Ratings, on offence we find MoSHBODS now with a Top 3 of Lions, Swans, and Cats, while on defence it now has a Top 3 of Dockers, Hawks, and Blues. Thirteen teams are rated as above average on offence but only seven on defence.

Offensive ratings currently span a range of 1.59 standard deviations (up) and defensive ratings a range of 1.13 standard deviations (down). The standard deviation of offensive ratings across all teams is 0.46 and that for defensive ratings 0.30. As has been true all season, teams are more differentiated by their offensive abilities than by their defensive abilities.

The correlation between the teams’ MoSHBODS offensive and defensive Ratings now stands at +0.764, which is slightly up on last week.

We can also look at the trajectory that each team has taken so far in 2026 to arrive at their current rating.

MARS RATINGS

MARS now has 11 teams rated better-than-average, with Gold Coast and St Kilda missing out by about 5 Rating Points.

As noted earlier, it has a different Top 3 to MoSHBODS, albeit that the four highest-rated teams are separated by only 1.3 Rating Points.

The gap from 1st to 2nd is now 0.7 Rating Points (down), from 1st to 4th is 1.3 Rating Points (down), and from 1st to 10th is 31.2 Rating Points (down).

Across all 18 teams, the Ratings span 86.5 Rating Points (down), the mean is 1,000 Rating Points, and the standard deviation is 31.2 Rating Points (down).

COMPARISON OF MOSHBODS AND MARS

The correlation between MoSHBODS’ Combined Ratings and MARS’ Ratings stands at +0.991 and, roughly speaking, each team’s Combined MoSHBODS Rating is about 0.024 times its MARS Rating less 24.1.

Looking firstly at the comparison between the ordering of the teams on MoSHBODS and MARS compared to their ordering on the competition ladder we see that the teams with the largest discrepancies are:

In short, the competition ladder has done a good job of ordering teams roughly in accordance with their Rating order.

MoSHBODS and MARS agree about the ranking of only seven teams now, and differ by as much as two spots about only six teams, including a three spot difference for Fremantle.

Overall, the rank correlation between the two Systems is +0.965.
