2021 - Team Ratings After Round 3

It’s the Western Bulldogs who now hold top spot on both MoS Team Rating Systems, ahead of Melbourne. Richmond has 3rd spot on MoSSBODS, but Port Adelaide has it on MoSHBODS.

It was the round of the great reshuffling, with, altogether, MoSSBODS reranking 17 teams, 14 of them by more than a single spot, and MoSHBODS reranking 16, 11 of them by more than a single spot.

The correlation between MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS Combined Ratings now stands at +0.9954.

On the Component Ratings MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS now have Top 3s of Dogs, Swans, and Lions, while on Defence, MoSSBODS has it as Pies, Dees, and Tigers, and MoSHBODS as Pies, Dees, and Dogs.

On MoSSBODS, 6 teams are now rated positively on offence and defence (no change), 4 are rated negatively on both (down 2), 4 are rated positively on offence but negatively on defence (up 2), and 4 are rated negatively on offence but positively on defence (no change). The correlation between the teams’ MoSSBODS offensive and defensive Ratings now stands at +0.464, which is the lowest it’s been for some time.

And, finally, to MARS, which re-ranked 13 teams this week, including swapping Port Adelaide in for Richmond in top spot.

Only five teams moved by more than a single spot, however.

With St Kilda now Rated at 994.8, MARS has only 9 teams rated as better-than-average, with six more Rated 990 or above.

The Rating gap between first and last now stands at 44 Rating Points (up 1). By comparison, at the same point last year the range was just under 40 Rating Points.

Looking across the rankings of all three Systems and ordering the teams based on the current competition ladder, we find the highest differences for Sydney and Adelaide where Rating System rankings are relatively lower than Ladder position, and for Brisbane Lions where Rating System rankings are relatively higher than Ladder position.

MARS continues to provide the most outlying rankings of the three Systems, it having the outright most-extreme ranking for 15 of the teams, with Western Bulldogs, Melbourne, West Coast, Gold Coast, and St Kilda the most notable examples.

By comparison, MoSSBODS has the outright most-extreme ranking for six teams, and MoSHBODS for just four.

Lastly, if we consider the range of rankings that the three Systems have attached to each team, we find that Gold Coast, Port Adelaide, and West Coast (5 spots) have the widest range of rankings, while 8 teams have rankings that differ by no more than 2 spots, including North Melbourne for which all three Systems have the same unflattering ranking.
