MoSHBODS changed the ranking of a dozen teams this week, but left its Top 3 of Dogs, Hawks, and Suns unchanged. The only team moving by more than a couple of spots was Fremantle, up five spots into 4th.

MARS moved only seven teams including swtiching the Suns into 2nd ahead of the Hawks, but leaving the Dogs in 1st.

MoSHBODS RATINGS

Overall, MoSHBODS still has only nine teams rated as above average.

On the Component Ratings, on offence we find MoSHBODS now with a Top 3 of Dogs, Hawks, and Suns, while on defence it has a Top 3 of Suns, Pies, and Dogs. Twelve teams are rated as above average on offence and only eight on defence.

Offensive ratings currently span a range of 1.29 standard deviations (up) and defensive ratings a range of 0.95 standard deviations (also up). The standard deviation of offensive ratings across all teams is 0.36 and that for defensive ratings 0.30. Teams therefore remain more differentiated by their offensive abilities than their defensive abilities,

The correlation between the teams’ MoSHBODS offensive and defensive Ratings now stands at +0.79, which is up on last week.

MARS RATINGS

MARS still has 10 teams rated better-than-average, after which there is a now larger gap to Melbourne’s 994.8 and St Kilda’s same Rating.

The gap from 1st to 2nd is 5.7 Rating Points, from 1st to 4th is 15.1 Rating Points, and from 1st to 10th is 28.2 Rating Points. Those gaps have generally widened this week, thanks partly to another Rating Points gain by the Western Bulldogs this week.

Across all 18 teams, the Ratings span 64.6 Rating Points, the mean is 1,000 Rating Points, and the standard deviation is 19.3 Rating Points, up from 18.4 Rating Points.

It’s still early in the season, but I think there is some worrying evidence already that the gap between the best and worst teams might become quite large, quite quickly.

COMPARISON OF MOSHBODS AND MARS

The correlation between MoSHBODS’ Combined Ratings and MARS’ Ratings stands at +0.98 and, roughly speaking, each team’s Combined MoSHBODS Rating is about 0.031 times its MARS Rating less 31.

MoSHBODS and MARS agree about the ranking of only 2 teams now, but differ by no more than two spots about the remaining teams except for Fremantle and West Coast.

Overall, the rank correlation between the two Systems is +0.961
