2017 - Team Ratings After Round 24 (Week 1 of the Finals)

MoSSBODS now rates Sydney as the top team, ahead of Adelaide and Richmond, while MoSHBODS has an unchanged Top 3 of Adelaide, Sydney and Richmond. On both Systems, the Ratings gap between Adelaide and Sydney is very small.

Geelong were the only team to move on both Systems this week, falling two places to 7th on MoSSBODS, and one place to 6th on MoSHBODS.

The Western Bulldogs, who benefited from Geelong's slide on MoSSBODS is now the only team ranked more than two places differently under the two Systems - they're 6th on MoSSBODS and 9th on MoSHBODS.

On Offensive Ratings, only Richmond and Geelong moved multiple spots on both Systems, the Tigers climbing two spots on both, and the Cats plummeting four spots on MoSSBODS and three on MoSHBODS.

Defensively, there were almost no re-rankings this week, the lone change seeing GWS and Geelong swapping 5th and 6th on MoSHBODS.

On offence, MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS still both have the Top 3 as Adelaide, Sydney, and then Essendon while defensively, both still have the Top 3 as Sydney, Richmond and then Adelaide.

The latest round-by-round MoSSBODS Rating journey animation appears below and shows the emergence of Richmond into a clear 3rd spot.

Further on MoSSBODS Ratings, prior to this week's games I wrote a blog piece looking at the MoSSBODS offensive and defensive Ratings of the 2017 Finalists, comparing them with the Ratings of all Finalists since 2000. I noted there that Geelong and GWS were relatively lowly rated in historical terms given their ladder finishes, and that Sydney were relatively highly rated on the same basis. That assessment seems to have been borne out in the weekend's results.

ChiPS AND MARS

ChiPS moved four teams this week, switching Richmond into 2nd ahead of Adelaide, and GWS into 5th ahead of Geelong.

MARS was far more active, moving eight teams, most notably elevating Sydney into 1st, Port Adelaide into 3rd, and Richmond into 4th, while dropping Adelaide to 2nd, Geelong to 5th, and GWS to 6th.

That left ChiPS with a Top 3 of Sydney, Richmond, Adelaide compared to MARS' Sydney, Adelaide, Port Adelaide.

Across the four Systems, only Adelaide, Sydney and Richmond appear in the Top 4 of each. Sydney is now 1st on every System except MoSHBODS

The largest disparities in the rankings across the four Systems are now for:

  • Essendon (ranked 8th on MoSHBODS and 13th on MARS)
  • Melbourne (ranked 8th on MARS, and 13th on MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS)
  • Western Bulldogs (ranked 6th on MoSSBODS and 12th on ChiPS)
  • St Kilda (ranked 7th on MoSHBODS, and 13th on ChiPS)

No other team is ranked more than four places differently across the Systems.
