2017 - Team Ratings After Round 12

To state the stunningly obvious, 2017 has been a year where form has dominated class, in which context Port Adelaide's 70-point loss to Essendon, and GWS' narrow loss to Carlton should come as little surprise.

Port's loss cost it top spot on both MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS, though GWS found itself a spot higher on both Systems despite their loss thanks to an even larger, 46-point loss by the previously third-placed Western Bulldogs.

The Dogs' opponents, Sydney, were the week's big climbers, up four places into 5th on MoSSBODS and three places into 6th on MoSHBODS.

All the week's movements have left the two Systems differing by more than one spot in the ranking of just one team, Geelong, which MoSSBODS ranks 7th and MoSHBODS 5th.

Compared to the competition ladder ordering, however, the two Systems' team rankings are in some cases very different, most of all for:

  • Sydney: 14th on the ladder, but 5th on MoSSBODS and 6th on MoSHBODS
  • Collingwood: 13th on the ladder, but 6th on MoSSBODS and 7th on MoSHBODS
  • Richmond: 8th on the ladder, but 4th on MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS
  • West Coast: 8th on the ladder, but 12th on MoSSBODS and MoSHBODS
  • Fremantle: 10th on the ladder, but 16th on MoSSBODS and 17th on MoSHBODS

The two Systems' rankings remain very similar at the component level where we find no team differing in its offensive or defensive ranking under the two Systems by more than two places except Carlton, who are ranked 7th by MoSSBODS and 10th by MoSHBODS on defence.

On offence, MoSSBODS still has the top three, in order, as Adelaide, Port Adelaide and GWS. MoSHBODS still has Adelaide in 1st, but has GWS in 2nd, and Port Adelaide in 3rd.

On defence, we have Western Bulldogs, Sydney and Richmond as MoSSBODS' top three, with MoSHBODS again agreeing about top spot and again flipping MoSSBODS' 2nd and 3rd teams.

A little further down the table it's worth noting the large movements by Essendon this week, up five places on offensive rankings, and up two or three on defensive rankings. That was enough to move it up two places on overall rating as well, and into 11th on both Systems.

We can see the round-by-round MoSSBODS Rating journey of all the teams in the following animation. Note, in particular, the declines for Port Adelaide, GWS and the Western Bulldogs in the latest round.

And, we can see how the current MoSSBODS Ratings compare to teams throughout history at the same point in their respective seasons in the following chart.

Very few teams have played in a Grand Final with ratings after Round 12 below those currently associated with the seven highest-rated teams: Adelaide, Port Adelaide, GWS, Western Bulldogs, Sydney, Collingwood and Geelong. None have won a Grand Final with a rating below that of Essendon.

ChiPS AND MARS

ChiPS found the Crows' victory mildly unsatisfactory this week and so transferred 0.2 Rating Points (RP) to the team they defeated, St Kilda. MARS felt the Crows did more than enough and transferred 3.3 RP from the Saints to them. Both Systems still have the Crows as the top-ranked team, however.

In other news, GWS climbed over Port Adelaide into 2nd on ChiPS, while Geelong climbed two spots into 2nd on MARS, GWS held down 3rd, Sydney climbed a spot into 4th, and Port Adelaide fell three spots back into 5th.

We'll finish this week by bringing together the overall team rankings of all four Systems and comparing them with the current competition ladder ordering. Note that the icons here denote System team ranking relative to ladder ranking.
